In this article, Errol Morris takes charge of the role of mediator in a discussion about the story of two controversial photographs. These belong to Roger Fenton, and were captured in an obscure moment in the Crimean War.
It has the participation of various writers and curators, such as Ulrich Keller, Haworth-Booth, Gordon Baldwin, Malcolm Daniel, Richard Pare, Ralph Bowmeester, Chris Russ, Roy Flukinger and Dennis Purcell. This debate is very pertinent, as it raises important issues regarding authorial intentionality and critical interpretation.
Graphically, it is organized through a symmetrical grid. Each page shows different types of columns, that stand for different purposes throughout the article, such as flowing text, interviews and highlights.
The text is represented by two sans serif typefaces: Univers – designed by Adrian Frutiger – for the flowing text, interviews, subtitles and footnotes; and Helvetica – Max Miedinger – for titles and highlights. The use of two sans serif fonts symbolizes the duality existent in the article subject. The images vary from size, although they always regard the grid blocks.
